I attempt batik

This is my first attempt at a batik watercolor painting, following the instructions on Empty Easel (http://emptyeasel.com/2011/12/13/the-fascinating-painting-technique-of-watercolor-batik/). It doesn’t look much like a batik.  I don’t think I crinkled the paper vigorously enough. Perhaps I’ll give it another try tomorrow.

It’s lovely, Sharon–an improvement on the “lesson”!

IS this where you take rice paper, dampen it, crinkle it, paint on the back and later the front? Whatever, it has a wonderfully textured result. Happy new year to you, Sharon.

The instructions for this are a bit different Sherry. (No painting on both sides.) After the painting is complete, whatever needs to be protected is waxed, then the background is painted. After the background dries, the whole painting is then covered with wax. When the wax hardens, the painting is crinkled. Then the whole sheet is painted with a darker color to get the batik effect. I’m not sure the rice paper I purchased is the correct paper (washi). It was pretty fragile and tore in several places. But I’m going to give it another try.
